Constant Issues and Unprofessional Management

A seven year renter here and left for a much better renting situation here in Plainville after constant issues and difficult relationships with management. From day one, we moved into a unit claiming to be ready following renovations only to have to remove dust and debris for days to be move in ready. Not once did they offer to clean for us or commit to making sure this was fixed.

Over seven years, I lost hot water, heat, and air conditioning. Hot water was a constant issue with the boiler...
acting up regularly and was a yearly issue. Last summer, I lost air conditioning at a poor time with temps 100+ for several days in a row. Management was extremely slow to react, leaving me with no AC for several days and never offered assistance or any kind of remedy. I had to seek out an alternative place to stay as it was simply too hot and unsafe.

Any issue in general was slow to be resolved, weekend help was pretty much nonexistent, you really only could get ahold of someone during business hours. Constant excuses like “we have a lot of units” or “our repair man is really busy” left me feeling neglected or made to feel bad for thinking repairs or help would come sooner.

This complex is owned by a large, out of state group who doesn’t show too much compassion to their renters. It certainly is obvious with some of their make shift or cheap repairs. The bushes around my windows were so tall over the years that I lost the ability to look out of my windows fully. Part of the building has shifted, so some floors slant ever so slightly or some doors are tough to open. I had to yank my bedroom closet door open daily as it was so tight when closed. These are old units so repairs are common and that’s understandable, however, it’s unacceptable to provide bare minimum maintenance and normalize the kind of poor customer service that they provided during these constant issues.

Their contract renewal process tries to lock tenants in months prior to the lease being up, making it hard to leave. If you’re wanting a stress free, clean, issue free renting environment with accessible management around the clock, this certainly isn’t for you. The prior reviewers’ summary summed up many of the issues that I ran into. Seems like it’s a common theme here.

Unprofessional Management & Ongoing Issues

Our experience at this complex was filled with poor communication and unresolved issues. We were promised a first-floor unit, but two weeks before moving in (from out of state), we were told it was no longer available and had to accept a second-floor unit.

On move-in day, the property manager seemed surprised we arrived. The unit wasn’t ready, was still being cleaned, and the bathtub had been poorly reglazed — which peeled within a month.

That spring, we discovered mold growing in our storage...
unit ceiling. We lost clothing, linens, and furniture due to the mildew. The complex offered no reimbursement, only a move to a smaller, less secure unit — at the same price.

The washer stopped working properly and left clothes soaked. Maintenance dismissed the issue, but we later found the motor belt had snapped. We bought a new belt ourselves but couldn’t repair it. We were without laundry access for weeks with no help.

Security was also a problem. Our car was broken into. The complex had cameras but never followed up or improved safety. A neighbor’s car was broken into the next year — still, no action.

When we tried to extend our lease by just two weeks due to a moving delay, we were met with a flat no — despite being quiet, respectful tenants who dealt with constant problems.

The same property manager that gave us headaches on move in, also gave us headaches when we were moving out. She came to our door to show the apartment at times not agreed to and was absolutely disrespectful of our privacy and time.

Between the lack of accountability, maintenance failures, and security issues, we cannot recommend this complex to anyone. If you like to feel like a valued and respected tenant, stay away.

Central to everything.

I absolutely love living here. The dog park in the back is wonderful. Never had an issue with excessive noise. Valerie the property manager is very sweet and helpful. Most of our neighbors are quite pleasant. We will absolutely be renewing our lease.

Outstanding Customer Service

I had a wonderful experience living here. From the beginning, Valerie the property manager was very helpful and accommodating. She kept me updated on availability and met with me several times to show me different apartments. When I moved in, the apartment was spotless. I rented a two bedroom apartment on the second floor. The apartments are very spacious. The neighbors are friendly but respect your privacy. Pets are allowed and there is even a special fenced off area for pets to play. The... location provides easy access to several stores and restaurants and is close to the highway. I cannot say enough good things about my experience here and would recommend Sunset Rock to anyone looking for an apartment.
