Not a Good Experience

After four years in this apartment, I can confidently say that this was not a positive experience. First, let me give special credit to the maintenance team who does their best in a very difficult situation. Unfortunately, the persistent issues this building has will take away your peace of mind. Rats and insects will be a routine problem in this apartment. I knew pest control on a first-name basis after so many visits. The heating did not work in my apartment for the first two years in this...
building. You will smell marijuana in the hallways. The elevators in a building with 17 floors will break down all the time. Last-minute notices where the trash room is made unavailable. Far too many instances where the building does not have hot water. The AC system will break down for weeks every summer. A fire broke out a few years ago that eliminated the ability to use the laundry rooms for all residents for months. A recent pipe burst eliminated any access to water. A current pipe project in the building will restrict water access for tenants for eight hours at least once or twice a week. Management will not credit or discount your rent in any of these situations. If you are considering a career in the military or the foreign service, be sure to add a military or diplomatic clause into the lease. The Civil Service Relief Act and the Foreign Service Families Act will give you the right to cancel a lease once you have military or diplomatic orders. In my own experience, the leasing office will complicate your efforts in exercising the benefits of this law. No follow-up comment is needed, no need for a request to meet, nor an apology is needed; management should leverage that time to do a better job.

A temporary living situation at best

• Air Conditioning: AC only runs 6 months a year and we are constantly experiencing outages • Dogs: A lot of terrible dog owners with untrained dogs with aggressive and reactive behavior • Elevators: The building ran on more than one occasion on one single elevator for 15+ floors/250+ apartments creating waiting periods and lines • Neighbors: Neighbors that smoke cigarettes/weed in the apartment complex and some who will leave their gas stoves on, creating fumes that will stagger and enter your... apartment • Windows/Balconies: Neighbors that stalk you through the windows and balconies, and some who have very loud conversations, having kept me from opening my windows/curtains for the entire time that I have lived here. • Roaches: Killed 4 cockroaches • Front Desk and Mail: Staff with negative attitudes, which are constantly getting fired due to their behavior, making a package retrieval more than unpleasant

Building wide cockroach infestation

I lived in the building between August 2017 and October 2022. I fled the building due to a cockroach infestation that impacted at least 5 floors that flourished due to management's negligence.

On September 7th, I reported roaches in my unit. Only by September 13th did the building first send a pest control specialist. When I later met with the assistant property manager, she told me that maintenance should have left traps and done some preliminary work before the 13th (I purchased traps myself)...
.

The next 6 weeks were a nightmare of roaches entering from my kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, and the hallway. I left for a weekend and sealed the bathroom door with duct tape. When I returned, found 12 dead roaches in the room.

I spoke to other tenants who told me they first reported a problem on their floor in April! As of October, they kept saying the did not know the source of the infestation but fired the pest control service. They rehired the previous exterminator who managed the building well but for some unknown reason stopped using about a year ago.

I documented live and dead roaches in hallways, stairwells, and laundry rooms throughout the building. Dead roaches that I informed the building about sat for days to weeks without being cleaned, although they urged me to constantly clean up roaches in my unit with the guidance that finding them dead was a sign of the treatment working. It was a rather binary scenario- either there are or aren't not roaches in my kitchen. Dead might be slightly better, but weeks of dead roaches is still unreasonable.

Management allowed me to break my lease without penalty, but the entire ordeal to move out, order take out in lieu of a kitchen I could comfortably use, living elsewhere for weeks while paying rent, and replacing furniture cost me about $5,000. They will not compensate the expenses.

Avoid The Aspen if you can. Their minimal response to an active cockroach infestation is deeply concerning.

Great management and customer service!

I have been living in The Aspen for almost 4 years now. Customer service from the leasing office has always been great, maintenance is very responsive and fixes issues within a couple of days of putting in a request. I have had an oven and microwave replaced with brand new ones when I had issues with the old ones. The fridge in the unit I transferred to was brand new as well. Residents are polite and friendly and I do not have an issue with noise levels (as mentioned in a previous review). Yes,... you can hear sometimes when people are walking down the hall or closing their cabinets in the kitchen but that is pretty much it. My floor is pretty quiet.

My only issue is that it is an older building and although management does the best they can for pest control, there are still tiny roaches. The only way I could get rid of them was by pouring boric acid powder on strategic corners of the kitchen and they are pretty much gone.

In the time I have lived here, management has redone/renovated the entire parking lot, the reception area, the carpets and paint in the hallway, all while keeping rent very affordable. They are really doing their best to keep the property clean and welcoming. If it wasn't for the roaches, I would give it a 5 star. However, I am satisfied living here.

great place and people

I cannot think of a safer and more caring place to live than The Aspen. I am a single mother my only biological son went to visit friends in VA and fell in love with the state. He decided to stay. My heart was filled with worry since this would be his 1st time out on his own. He asked for me to help him look for a place and of course I would have to cosign for the apt. until he found a job and got settled. I began working with Aleksandra Carteau who was absolutely A God sent! She walked us... through the whole process while trying to keep me calm about the distance since I live in CT. I had sooo many questions and concerns, anytime of the day this woman answered everyone. She has an unspeakable amount of patience and professionalism. The Aspen and Aleksandra was a God sent to my son and I. He loves it there!! If you are looking for a place especially if it is your first place. Hopefully, The Aspen will be a blessing to you as well. Also, if you get to work with Aleksandra consider yourself double blessed
